Pregnancy and Vitamin A Limits: Essential Safety Information

By The Gelagen Team · September 2026

Vitamin A is essential for fetal development, but excessive intake during pregnancy is teratogenic — it can cause birth defects. This is critical safety information for anyone pregnant or planning to become pregnant who considers taking Gelagen.

The upper limit

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for preformed Vitamin A during pregnancy is 3000mcg RAE per day. This includes all sources: food, prenatal vitamins and additional supplements combined.

Our dose

Our formula contains 630mcg of Vitamin A as retinyl acetate. While this is well below the 3000mcg limit, it must be considered alongside your prenatal vitamin (which likely contains 750–1300mcg) and dietary sources.

The recommendation

Do not take Gelagen during pregnancy or while planning to become pregnant without explicit approval from your OB-GYN or midwife. They can calculate your total Vitamin A intake from all sources and determine whether our supplement is safe for your specific situation.

After pregnancy

During breastfeeding, Vitamin A requirements increase but so does the upper limit (to some extent). Discuss timing for resuming supplementation with your healthcare provider.
